Best eSIM for Italy in 2026 (440+ plans compared)
This post includes some affiliate links and I earn a small commission if you book through them. This helps keep this site running and lets me keep writing ultra-detailed travel guides that are free for you to use to plan your next adventure. Read more in my privacy policy.
🥇 The best value Italy eSIM for most travellers right now is MobiMatter’s 25GB for €17 eSIM (only €0.68 per GB), but there might be better options for you in the 440+ plans I compared depending on your data usage, trip length and convenience vs. budget priorities.
If you’re looking for the best eSIM for Italy to keep you connected from the Sicilian beaches to the peaks of the Dolomites and everywhere in between, without taking a chunk out of your travel budget or gambling on a brand you’ve never heard of, you’re in the right place!
I started writing ultra-detailed eSIM guides like this one after using a handful of different eSIMs on my own travels and realising that the big names splashed all across my feed were actually an absolute rip-off, sometimes two or three times the price of alternative options I found through deep research (a.k.a. absolute hyperfixation 🤓).
Italy is no exception either, some providers charge as much as 200% more than my recommended picks for the equivalent data and number of days, and a scary number of companies either conceal their fair use policies or outright lie about them.

Luckily for you I’m overly annoyed by manipulative marketing techniques and I get a concerning amount of dopamine from a well-organised spreadsheet, and I’ve used those traits for good to collate, compare and crown the best Italy eSIMs for different trip and traveller categories (and yes I get dopamine from alliterations too 🤌🏼).
Let’s dive in!
A quick note: These prices are valid as of 10 October 2026 but obviously eSIM pricing and plan details can change without notice, so always read the product info carefully before purchasing anything. I aim to update my eSIM guides at least every six months. For this reason I’ve used actual retail prices of all eSIMs rather than sale prices, sales change far too often to keep on top of and this is the fairest way to compare providers.
Quick summary: The best eSIMs for Italy

And the worst eSIMs for Italy…
Loads of eSIMs you probably see mentioned in Facebook groups, Reddit threads and blog round ups are wayyy overpriced, here are the ones that came out at the most expensive end of the spreadsheet or have red flags I couldn’t ignore:
- Airalo, Saily, Jetpac and aloSIM: Four of the major providers with big marketing budgets, but they’re consistently more expensive than my top picks for the same data (and sometimes over twice as much 😬)
- Holafly: The main unlimited eSIM brand, but they have a vague fair use policy, only allow 1GB of hotspotting per day and are significantly pricier than the best unlimited plans with clearer policies
- Maya: They promise unlimited data with “no caps, no throttling, no surprises”, but their own customer service team admitted to me that they can slow you down if you use more than 5GB a day
- Orange unlimited (unless you plan to use LOADS of data each day): Up to 100GB per day is unnecessary for 99.9% of travellers and if you’re a normal data user then you can find much cheaper unlimited plans with up to 5GB per day
- Simify unlimited: One of the priciest unlimited options with no confirmed daily limit stated, just a vague mention of potential throttling after “around 1-1.5GB” per day (which isn’t much)
- ETravelSim and iRoamly: Both advertise truly unlimited data with no throttling and no other limitations on their regional Europe eSIMs, butttt upon further investigation these didn’t check out either. Their Italy eSIMs don’t claim to be truly unlimited but both brands are red-flagged for me now!
Why trust these Italy eSIM recommendations?
Because I’ve done alllll the research so you don’t have to! I logged the price, data, validity, speed and fine print of more than 440 plans from 30 different providers and aggregators, I cross-checked trust signals for any red flags, then I analysed which of the legitimate options offered the best value for different types of trips and travellers.
And if you’ve got trust issues and want to make your own conclusions (no judgement, me too 🙃) I’ve listed every brand I looked at and their key plans so you can do your own comparison.
I want to make it clear up front that my “best eSIM for XYZ” rankings are completely independent and can’t be bought, I’ve turned down every single brand that tries to pay for a ranked spot (and there have been many!). Providers can pay for a guaranteed inclusion in the research and to be listed nearer to the top of the unranked provider overview below the category winners, these agreements keep my guides financially viable, but the rankings are never swayed by partnerships or affiliate programmes.
Do you need an eSIM for Italy?
If you’re visiting from outside the EU, don’t want to be reliant on laggy public WiFi hotspots and would prefer to suss out your connectivity before you land so you can hit the ground running, then yes, it’s a great idea to get an eSIM for Italy!
✅ Pros of using an eSIM in Italy
- Cheaper than roaming for most travellers: The best value eSIMs I found mostly sit between €0.52-€0.70/GB, which is much cheaper than most telcos would charge you for international roaming.
- No phone shop drama or waiting for activation: To buy a local SIM card in Italy you have to hand over your passport (anonymous SIM cards are illegal), and the registration process takes a while on the backend so it could take a few hours or even a full day for the data to actually start rolling, but most travel eSIMs let you skip both of these and are ready to connect as soon as you land!
- You can still access your normal number: You can keep your home SIM in your phone to receive texts (and calls but check your home carrier’s roaming charges for that) while you use the eSIM for mobile data.
❌ Cons of using an eSIM in Italy
- Your phone needs to be unlocked and eSIM-compatible: Older models don’t always support eSIMs and anything locked to a carrier won’t work with them either, check before you purchase anything as many aren’t refundable.
- Most are data-only: The only eSIMs I could find with an Italian number are WindTre’s tourist plans (which still require passport registration even if you buy online), a few providers have French or UK numbers, the rest are data-only.
- ‘Unlimited’ is kinda false advertising: Most unlimited plans throttle your speed after you hit the daily limit (typically between 1-5GB) and the details of the actual cap, the slowed-down speed or the reset time aren’t always stated up front, so take any unlimited claim with a grain of salt.
1. Best eSIM for Italy for most travellers: 25GB for €17 with MobiMatter
- Price & data: 25GB for €17
- Price per GB: €0.68
- Validity: 30 days
- Speed: 5G/4G/LTE
- Hotspot: Yes
- Get extra cashback with promocode FINDINGALEXX
If your data usage is fairly typical for a traveller (like maps, on-the-go research, WhatsApp and maybe a bit of social media scrolling while you’re waiting for a train), then MobiMatter’s 25GB for €17 NextLink eSIM gives you enough GBs to not leave you scrambling at the end of the month, or more than enough for normal usage on shorter trips.
Most of the other mainstream apps (Airalo, Jetpac, Maya, Saily etc.) have 20GB plans for between €23 to €26 so you pay more for less data, Ubigi’s 25GB plan isn’t bad at €19 but that’s €0.76/GB compared to MobiMatter’s €0.68/GB.
I haven’t used this particular single-country Italy eSIM but I have used their regional Europe NextLink plan multiple times, the MobiMatter app is super simple for searching/installing/tracking your eSIM usage and you get cashback with each purchase too, woohoo!
Pros:
- Best price per GB for any mid-range data eSIM from a trusted provider
- It runs on the TIM network which has the widest geographic coverage in Italy and is particularly strong in the Dolomites (even around the high-altitude mountain huts ⛰️) and rural areas
- No daily cap or hotspotting limit
- I’ve bought more than 50 MobiMatter eSIMs in the past three years (with my own money, not sponsored!) and haven’t had any issues
Cons:
- More data than you might need if you’re not in Italy for long
- You need to start using it within two months of buying it, so don’t book it too far ahead

Alternatives for most travellers
- If you don’t need as much data: MobiMatter NextLink 12GB for €9.50 is the same eSIM with roughly half the data if you’ll mostly be on WiFi (€0.79/GB).
- If you’d rather spend less upfront: SIMOVO 20GB for €13.95 comes out at €0.70/GB, about €3 less for 5GB less data.
- Cheapest on paper: Roamic 20GB for €10.99 and WorldSIM 20GB for €10.95 both work out at €0.55/GB, but when I dug into both brands I found a couple of red flags for each of them so I’m not comfortable recommending them until I can test the eSIMs for myself next time I’m in that part of the world (and I’ll explain this properly in the provider overview).
2. Best Italy eSIM for heavy data users: 50GB for €25.95 with SIMOVO
- Price & data: 50GB for €25.95
- Price per GB: €0.52
- Validity: 30 days
- Speed: 5G/4G
- Hotspot: Yes
- Get 10% off with promocode ALEXX10
For those of you who chew through your eSIM allowance with laptop hotspot sessions, video calls to show your sister the sunset from the cocktail bar or a few Netflix episodes on the night train because you forgot to download anything on WiFi (🙋🏼♀️), SIMOVO’s 50GB plan is just €9 more than pick #1 for double the data.
At just €25.95 it’s the best value high data option of any no-red-flags provider under €45 (there are 100-500GB options with higher upfront costs), unless you’re happy to deal with the bureaucracy of sorting out a local eSIM through WindTre.
Pros:
- 50GB is plenty of data for the vast majority of travellers for a one month trip
- No throttling or hotspot limits
Cons:
- They don’t specify the network/s it runs on, if you’re heading into the mountains then check with SIMOVO if it connects to TIM and if not then choose one that does
- Might not be enough data for anyone working remotely
💰 Save 10% on your SIMOVO eSIM with the code ALEXX10
Alternatives for heavy data users
- If 50GB isn’t enough:
- Orange has eSIMs with 100GB (30 or 45 days, from €0.50/GB), 200GB (45 days, from €0.37/GB) and 500GB (90 days, from €0.31/GB), but they’re 4G-only and take a decent chunk out of your budget
- The local provider WindTre has 200GB options for 30, 60 or 180 days for as little as €0.13/GB but you’ll need to complete the passport registration process online or in a physical store and then might have to wait for activation
- If you’re staying longer than a month: MobiMatter NextLink 50GB for €28 gives you 60 days instead of 30 for about €2 more than SIMOVO, more info on this one in the long trips pick.
3. Best unlimited Italy eSIM for a month: 5GB/day for €36.96 with Superalink
- Price: 30 days for €36.96
- Price per day: €1.23
- Speed: 5G/4G/3G
- Networks: TIM and Vodafone
- Daily high-speed allowance: 5GB, then unlimited at 1Mbps
- Hotspot: 2GB per day
- Get 20% off with promocode ALEXA0000
Loads of ‘unlimited’ Italy eSIMs slow you down after just 1 to 3GB a day, but Superalink’s month-long plan gives you 5GB of full-speed data daily for just €36.96, which is enough for consistent heavy use without having to worry about being throttled while you’re navigating your way home after a hectic day of sightseeing.
Ubigi’s 5GB/day plan is the next best option at €39 for 30 days, while Saily and Airalo charge €56.99 and €58 respectively for the same daily allowance, and Holafly (the major player in the unlimited category) costs €59.90 for a month with their daily high-speed cap not stated (but according to reviews it’s between 2-3GB per day) and only 1GB per day available for hotspotting.
One thing to note is that Superalink counts the 24 hour period from when you first connect rather than at midnight, so if you land at 3pm your 5GB allowance resets at that time each afternoon.
Pros:
- The cheapest 30-day plan with 5GB of full-speed data a day
- Connects to both TIM and Vodafone
- Unlimited 1Mbps after you hit your daily cap, which still lets you use maps, messaging, emails and basic browsing if you’re patient
Cons:
- The throttled speed won’t be enough for any intense web research or social media use, so download some entertainment on WiFi so you’ve got things to watch if you hit the limit while on a long train trip
- Hotspotting is capped at 2GB a day, so it’s not ideal for working off your laptop all day
💰 Save 20% on Superalink eSIMs with promocode ALEXA0000
Alternatives for a month of unlimited data
- For digital nomads: Ubigi’s 30-day unlimited for €39 (€1.30/day) also gives you the same 5GB a day and doesn’t set a separate hotspot limit, plus it slows to 2Mbps rather than 1Mbps once you hit the cap, so just a few extra €€€ for a more work-friendly option.
- If you’ll use under 1.5GB a day on average: Unlimited plans aren’t really worth it if that’s all you need, SIMOVO’s 50GB plan will last you the whole month for just €0.87/day which is better than any reputable unlimited plan.
4. Best unlimited Italy eSIM for two weeks: 5GB a day for €25 with Ubigi
- Price: 15 days for €25
- Price per day: €1.67
- Speed: 5G/4G/3G
- Networks: WindTre and Iliad
- Daily high-speed allowance: 5GB, then unlimited at 2Mbps
- Hotspot: Yes, no separate daily limit stated
For a shorter two-week trip, Ubigi’s 5GB-a-day for €25 (15 days so €1.67/day) juuuust beats out Superalink’s equivalent 5GB per day plan (€26.63 so €1.78/day).
Hotspotting is allowed within the daily limit so you can tether up to the full 5GB daily high speed cap if you need to, and if you do hit the ceiling the throttled speed is a fairly generous 2Mbps until that period resets.
I do have to say that Ubigi’s website is the stuff of UX nightmares, they have sooo many different products including monthly subscriptions and annual plans, so triple check the details before you buy anything.
Pros:
- The cheapest two-week plan with 5GB of full-speed data each day
- Throttled speed of 2Mbps is double what most providers throttle you to
- No separate hotspot cap
Cons:
- €25 for a two week trip isn’t that cheap if you don’t need that much daily data, if your usage will stay below 25GB total you’ll be better off buying MobiMatter’s 25GB for €17
Alternatives for two weeks of unlimited data
- If you’re staying for 10 or 12 days: Superalink’s 5GB/day unlimited plan has options for 10 days (€19.02) and 12 days (€22.29) to save you from paying for unnecessary coverage.
- If 5GB a day won’t cut it: Sim Local gives you double the daily data (10GB) for €39.50 for 15 days with throttled speed of 1Mbps, a bit of an investment but worth it for ultra-high data use!
5. Best cheap Italy eSIM: 10GB for €7.95 with SIMOVO
- Price & data: 10GB for €7.95
- Price per GB: €0.80
- Validity: 30 days
- Speed: 5G/4G
- Hotspot: Yes
- Get 10% off with promocode ALEXX10
If your data usage while travelling is limited to the odd maps check and keeping in touch with travel buddies or people back home, or if you’re only in Italy for a week or so, SIMOVO’s 10GB plan for €7.95 is a fantastic value option sub-€10.
It’s also less than half of what Airalo and Saily charge for the same data!
Just keep an eye on your usage to make sure you’re staying on track and don’t get caught out towards the end of your trip.
Pros:
- A month of data for less than a pizza at a sit-down restaurant
- Cheaper than most 10GB plans that only last a week
Cons:
- 10GB won’t cover a whole month for typical traveller usage (maps, browsing, scrolling, communication) unless you’re actively limiting your own usage
💰 Save 10% on SIMOVO eSIMs with promocode ALEXX10
Alternatives for budget travellers
- If 10GB feels a bit tight: MobiMatter’s 12GB for €9.50 is a smaller version of my top pick for most travellers (the first category), only €1.55 more than SIMOVO for an extra 2GB.
- Cheapest 10GB on paper: Roamic’s 10GB for €5.99 is the absolute lowest price for 10GB, but as I already mentioned I’ve got some reservations about them (more in the provider overview).
6. Best Italy eSIM for stopovers and cruise stops: 2GB for €3.50 with MobiMatter
- Price & data: 2GB for €3.50
- Price per GB: €1.75
- Validity: 15 days
- Speed: 5G/4G/LTE
- Hotspot: Yes
- Get extra cashback with promocode FINDINGALEXX
Trust me when I say that you don’t want to be stranded at Milan Bergamo airport during a self-transfer between Ryanair flights and have to rely on the subpar airport WiFi to navigate how to deal with your second flight being cancelled.
If you’ve got a few hours in Italy as a stopover then 2GB with MobiMatter for €3.50 is enough to download an emergency episode or two for the next flight, and if you’re on a cruise it’ll cover navigation and essential on-the-ground research during your Italy excursions.
The 15-day validity is also better than most low-data eSIMs available, so you can keep connected on both stopovers or port days within a two week period.
Pros:
- Cheap and cheerful
- 15 days can cover stopovers both sides of a (short) trip
- You can easily top up the eSIM in the app if you do run out
Cons:
- 2GB can disappear quickly if you accidentally have ‘mobile data downloads’ switched on in Spotify or any streaming apps, or ‘mobile data uploads’ switched on in your photo apps
💰 Get extra cashback on your first MobiMatter eSIM with the code FINDINGALEXX
Alternatives for stopovers and cruise stops
- If you’re only there for a day: Jetpac’s 2GB for €2 is a cheaper option for 24 hours if you just have a single stopover or one day in port.
- If you want a bit more breathing room and longer coverage: Ubigi’s 3GB for €5 gives you an extra GB and a full 30 days to cover inbound and outbound stopovers for longer trips.

7. Best Italy eSIM for long trips: 50GB over 60 days for €28 with MobiMatter
- Price & data: 50GB for €28
- Price per GB: €0.56
- Validity: 60 days
- Speed: 5G/4G/LTE
- Hotspot: Yes
- Get extra cashback with promocode FINDINGALEXX
For extended Italian summers or if you’re visiting multiple times in a two month period, MobiMatter’s NextLink eSIM has a 50GB, 60-day option that keeps you connected for only €0.56/GB.
This is perfectly suited to typical data users staying over 30 days (the usual cut-off for most plans), and if you’re lucky enough to be staying the full 90 days of the visa-free or Schengen tourist visa allowance, two of these back-to-back (100GB for €56) are still great value for a trusted 5G-compatible eSIM without spending upwards of €150 for the mega-data Orange ones.
Lots of the major eSIM brands don’t even offer plans for over 30 days so I hate to think how many travellers have been duped into wasting money and time topping up at the 30 day mark.
Pros:
- Cheaper and more convenient than buying two 30-day plans
- €0.56 per GB is crazy good value for a long trip
Cons:
- 50GB won’t last two months for heavier users
💰 Get extra cashback on your first MobiMatter eSIM with the code FINDINGALEXX
Alternatives for long trips
- If you need more data: GlobalYO’s 100GB for ~€45 also lasts 60 days at just €0.45/GB but it’s 4G-only, or WindTre’s 200GB 60-day option for €25 offers the best value if you don’t mind the hassle of passport registration and activation.
- If you’re staying three months and consistently stick to 20GB per month: Ubigi has a 20GB subscription for just €9 per month with a three-month minimum, you just have to remember to cancel the auto-renew and if you hit 20GB early you’ll need to buy a bridging eSIM.
- If you’re coming and going over six months: A few options stay valid for a full 180 days, there’s SIMOVO’s 50GB for €32.95, WindTre’s 200GB for €50, GigSky’s 50GB for €28.99 and SimOptions’ 100GB for €71.90 (but those last two have important caveats in the provider section).
8. Best Italy tourist eSIM from a local network: 200GB for €25 with WindTre
- Price & data: 200GB for €25 (30 and 60 day options) and 200GB for €50 for 180 days
- Price per GB: €0.13 (30 and 60 day options), €0.25 (180 days)
- Validity: 30 / 60 / 180 days
- Speed: 5G/4G
- Hotspot: Yes
- Phone number: Yep an Italian number with unlimited minutes in Italy
WindTre is one of Italy’s major mobile networks and the only one (that I could find anyway) that has tourist eSIMs available to purchase online. Their 200GB Tourist Pass plans actually beat every other Italy eSIM available if we only look at price per GB, butttt don’t get too excited because that’s not the whole story.
As I’ve alluded to already, there’s a fair bit of bureaucracy behind buying an eSIM in Italy because of the law requiring all local SIMs to be linked to official identity documents (this is an anti-terrorism measure by the way). This means if you buy a SIM or eSIM with an Italian number you must provide your passport and then wait for the registration to go through before the SIM starts working, which can take up to 48 hours or even longer.
I’d advise against buying a WindTre eSIM online for this reason, it’s very unclear how long the passport check and activation might take and you don’t want to toggle off airplane mode to see the dreaded no-data symbol and have to join the queue at an airport stall anyway!
If the 200GB allowance and/or longer validity options are tempting then I’d recommend heading into a store to get it all set up in person, and get a cheap, low-data eSIM like pick #5 or #6 above to cover you from when you arrive until the big eSIM starts working.
The other thing I want to flag with WindTre is that I had a not-so-great experience with them myself, although this was back in 2022. I bought a physical SIM from a store in Naples which was meant to have a Switzerland add-on activated for the next part of my trip, but when I got to Switzerland it didn’t work and their customer service sent me around in circles for hours and hours before I could get it sorted.

As of 2026 I can see on their website that they have a dedicated WhatsApp number for Tourist Pass customers (+393929332224) and the app now seems to be available to all regions rather than being locked to Italy, though it looks like it’s still only in Italian (which is to be expected but not ideal if you don’t speak the language haha).
Basically the TLDR is that the value for money is unbeatable if you need that much data, but it comes with some inconveniences that could cost you extra money or waste your time.
Pros:
- €0.13/GB is the cheapest rate of any Italy eSIM by a long way
- Comes with an Italian number and unlimited calls in Italy + 100 minutes to other countries (full list on their product page)
- 60 and 180-day options for longer stays
- A dedicated WhatsApp line for international customers
Cons:
- No guarantee on how long the activation takes and there are online reviews from customers saying it took days
- This eSIM is only for visitors, if you’re living in Italy and have an Italian tax code (codice fiscale) you won’t be able to buy it
- The app and most of the website (including the login area and T&Cs) are all in Italian with no option to switch to English (only the Tourist Pass pages and checkout are in English)
What about other local Italy eSIMs for tourists?
Vodafone and TIM both have tourist plans with loads of data too, but you’ll need to go into one of their stores in Italy with your passport to buy one and from what I can see they’re only available as physical SIM cards:
- Vodafone Dolce Vita: 100GB for €14.95, 200GB for €19.95 or 300GB for €24.95 a month with 200 minutes of calls in Italy and to over 40 countries
- TIM Tourist: 200GB for €14.99 for 30 days plus €10 for the SIM card, and it includes unlimited calls in Italy and 100 international minutes

9. Best emergency backup eSIM for Italy: pay-as-you-go credit with Roamless
- Price & data: Pay-as-you-go credit
- Price per GB: ~€1.74 in Italy ($1.95USD)
- Validity: Credit never expires
- Speed: 5G/4G
- Hotspot: Yes
- Calls: You can make calls with your Roamless Credits too
Roamless works differently to every other eSIM in this guide, instead of buying a fixed amount of data in a one-off purchase and activating your plan, you just top up your Roamless Credits and then any data you use is charged per MB at that destination’s rate (which is $1.95USD/GB in Italy, so 500MB of use would cost just under $1USD).
That’s more than 2.5x the rate of my recommended 25GB plan and double the 10GB plan so it’s certainly not a good option for your daily data use, but having some pay-as-you-go credit available to use if your main eSIM plays up or if you run out of GBs unexpectedly could be a lifesaver.
Credits don’t expire and they work in 180 countries around the globe, so if you don’t use it in Italy it’ll sit there for whenever you need to dip into it in the future.
Pros:
- You can use your credit for data or calls almost anywhere in the world (rates depend on destination)
- Roamless Credits never expire
- You can set up an auto top-up if you want to make sure you’ve always got some money in your balance just in case
Cons:
- Pretty expensive if you were using more than 1-2GB in Italy
- They have fixed data plans available too but they’re not competitive
Best eSIMs for Italy plus other European countries
If Italy’s just one stop on a bigger Europe trip then a regional eSIM is usually better value than stacking different single-country eSIMs, and it’s much more convenient than needing to activate a new one each time you cross a border.
I’ve got a full Europe eSIMs guide (another 400+ plans compared in that one!) with the detailed breakdown of prices, validity, speeds and fair use policies, plus a standardised country count and notable exclusions so you can easily see which eSIMs cover the places you’re visiting.
Here are the winners for the key categories:
- For most travellers: MobiMatter NextLink Europe 35GB for €25 covers 36 countries (but not Switzerland)
- Including Switzerland: MobiMatter Sparks Europe + USA 30GB for €23
- On a budget: MobiMatter Sparks Europe Special 10GB for €10 (also includes Switzerland)
- Unlimited: Sim Local 5GB a day for €52.75 for 30 days (includes Switzerland)
An overview of Italy eSIM providers & their options
There’s a good chance that the eSIM brands you recognise from your social media feed *didn’t* take out any of the top spots, and this is the part of the guide where I show you why.
I’ve profiled all 30 providers from my Italy eSIM spreadsheet below (because if you saw the sheet you’d go cross-eyed haha) so you can see the best plans from each one and whether they’ve hidden anything sneaky in the fine print, plus I’ve added some promocodes for the bigger non-winning brands just so you can save a bit of money if you choose to go with them for user experience reasons.
Some things to keep in mind:
- This section is not ranked by value for money or my recommendations, it’s an exhaustive list of all the providers I looked at so you can see my workings and how I came to the conclusions in the rankings.
- Brands can pay to be included in my research (which gives them a guaranteed spot in this provider overview) and to sit higher in this list, this income covers the time I spend on collating and updating my eSIM guides, but I write every single section myself and no brand deal ever impacts the category winners or recommendations above.
- A few brands only show prices in USD or AUD, I’ve converted those to euros for the sake of the comparison so they might be slightly different when you click through

MobiMatter
🏆 Winner of: Best for most travellers (25GB), Best for stopovers and cruise stops (2GB) and Best for long trips (50GB over 60 days)
MobiMatter is where I buy the vast majority of my own travel eSIMs from, because a) they let you add multiple countries to the search bar so you can easily find regional eSIMs that cover all your destinations, b) they let you sort by ‘price per GB’ so you can compare by value rather than just by total price, and c) they’re almost always in the top few best value options, plus they give you cashback with each purchase!
They’re actually an eSIM marketplace that sells a range of different eSIM plans which could vary in coverage/speed/activation details, so you’ve gotta make sure you read the product page properly before you buy anything, but any fair use policies or other restrictions are always displayed transparently (unlike manyyyy providers who try to bury them deep in the T&Cs).
Note: All eSIMs are 30 days unless specified otherwise.
MobiMatter’s best Italy eSIMs:
- NextLink (📶5G):
- 2GB for €3.50 (€1.75/GB, 15 days)
- 12GB for €9.50 (€0.79/GB)
- 25GB for €17 (€0.68/GB)
- 50GB for €28 (€0.56/GB, 60 days)
- Ubigi (📶5G):
- 50GB for €29 (€0.58/GB)
- Sparks France + Italy (📶5G, covers France too obviously!):
- 30GB for €23 (€0.77/GB)

SIMOVO
🏆 Winner of: Best for heavy data users (50GB) and Best cheap eSIM (10GB)
SIMOVO took out the top spot in two categories, and out of the hundreds of Italy plans in my spreadsheet they had either the cheapest or second-cheapest 30-day option at 10GB, 20GB and 50GB from all trusted brands. Not bad at all!
They also sell unlimited plans but their 5GB/day ones aren’t competitive, and the 1GB/day and 2GB/day options aren’t really worth it because you can get the same total amount of data for the same price (or less) with a fixed plan, without being tied to a 24-hour reset and relegated to snail-paced speeds if you hit the cap.
Note: All eSIMs are 30 days unless specified otherwise.
SIMOVO’s best Italy eSIMs (📶5G):
- 3GB for €5.95 (15 days, €1.98/GB)
- 5GB for €6.95 (€1.39/GB)
- 10GB for €7.95 (€0.80/GB)
- 20GB for €13.95 (€0.70/GB)
- 50GB for €25.95 (€0.52/GB)
- 50GB for €32.95 (180 days, €0.66/GB)
- Unlimited 1GB/day: 7 days for €8.95 (€1.28/day), 14 days for €14.95 (€1.07/day), 30 days for €26.95 (€0.90/day)
- Unlimited 2GB/day: 7 days for €13.95 (€1.99/day), 14 days for €26.95 (€1.93/day), 30 days for €46.95 (€1.57/day)
- Unlimited 5GB/day: 7 days for €27.95 (€3.99/day), 14 days for €46.95 (€3.35/day), 30 days for €89.95 (€3/day)

Superalink
🏆 Winner of: Best unlimited eSIM for a month (5GB a day)
If you’re a heavy data user planning a trip of up to a month, Superalink’s unlimited plans give you 5GB per day of high-speed data at the best price for all lengths they sell, except for 15 days (where Ubigi wins).
You can only hotspot for up to 2GB per day though, so if you’re working remotely then a plan without a tethering cap would suit you better.
Note: All eSIMs are 30 days unless specified otherwise.
Superalink’s Italy eSIMs (📶5G, 5GB a day):
- 7 days for €16.31 (€2.33/day)
- 10 days for €19.02 (€1.90/day)
- 12 days for €22.29 (€1.86/day)
- 15 days for €26.63 (€1.78/day)
- 30 days for €36.96 (€1.23/day)

Ubigi
🏆 Winner of: Best unlimited eSIM for two weeks (5GB a day)
Ubigi’s been around since the early days of eSIMs and usually they’re not thaaat impressive, but Italy is one of the places where some of their plans actually are worth considering.
They offer the cheapest month-long 3GB eSIM of any trusted brand if you’re just looking for a small chunk of data, and their unlimited plans give you 5GB per day (same as Superalink) but with hotspotting allowed within that full limit and a pretty-usable 2Mbps throttled speed.
Their auto-renewing subscriptions are a decent option if you’re parking up in Italy for a few months or more, just don’t forget to cancel.
Note: All eSIMs are 30 days unless specified otherwise.
Ubigi’s best Italy eSIMs (📶5G):
- 3GB for €5 (€1.67/GB)
- 10GB for €12 (€1.20/GB)
- 25GB for €19 (€0.76/GB)
- 50GB for €29 (€0.58/GB)
- Unlimited 5GB/day: 8 days for €19 (€2.38/day), 15 days for €25 (€1.67/day), 30 days for €39 (€1.30/day)
- 20GB a month for €9 (monthly subscription, 3-month minimum)

WindTre
🏆 Winner of: Best tourist eSIM from a local network (200GB)
You can read the full caveats about WindTre in the “best local network” category (which it won), but here’s a quick summary:
- Their Tourist Pass eSIMs are the best value options per GB out of all 440+ Italy eSIMs I found and compared
- Butttt you’ve got to register your passport before the eSIM starts working and online reviews/rants suggest this can take a while so it’s not ideal if you need immediate access to your data
- You get an Italian number with unlimited local calls
- The app and website account area are in Italian (unsurprising haha)
- My experience with WindTre customer service was not a positive one, however that was back in 2022 so they might’ve improved since then
So you’ve got to toss up the pros and cons here!
Note: All eSIMs are 30 days unless specified otherwise.
WindTre’s Italy eSIMs (📶5G, 📞):
- 200GB for €25 (€0.13/GB)
- 200GB for €25 (60 days, €0.13/GB)
- 200GB for €50 (180 days, €0.25/GB)
Roamless
🏆 Winner of: Best emergency backup eSIM (pay-as-you-go credit)
Roamless lets you load up credit and spend it on data or calls in almost any country you land in, and your balance never expires so it’s always there if you get stuck without a connection.
They sell fixed data plans too but they’re shit, buy a better-value plan as your main eSIM and keep Roamless as your safety net.
Note: All eSIMs are 30 days unless specified otherwise.
Roamless’s best Italy eSIMs (📶5G):
- 3GB for €6.64 (€2.21/GB)
- 10GB for €17 (€1.70/GB)
- 20GB for €23 (€1.15/GB)
- 50GB for €31 (€0.62/GB)
- Pay-as-you-go credit: ~€1.74/GB in Italy ($1.95USD/GB), credit never expires
Airalo
You’ve probably seen Airalo all over Instagram and TikTok, but you should know by now that their Italy eSIMs cost a lot more than you’d pay for the same GBs elsewhere.
Their user-friendly app and efficient customer service are decent though (I haven’t used them in Italy but have used them elsewhere and everything worked fine), so if you’re a first-time eSIM user or you’re setting one up for someone less tech-savvy, they might be worth the extra euros.
Note: All eSIMs are 30 days unless specified otherwise.
Airalo’s best Italy eSIMs (📶5G):
- 3GB for €6.50 (3 days, €2.17/GB)
- 10GB for €17.50 (€1.75/GB)
- 20GB for €23.50 (€1.18/GB)
- 50GB for €32 (€0.64/GB)
- Unlimited 5GB/day: 7 days for €21 (€3/day), 15 days for €40 (€2.67/day), 30 days for €58 (€1.93/day)

Holafly
Holafly is synonymous with unlimited eSIMs thanks to their mega marketing budget, but they’re another option where you pay a premium for smooth user experience.
They also don’t say how much full-speed data you get each day (they just say it’s up to the local networks’ fair use policies, unhelpful!) and you can only hotspot up to 1GB each day which is one of the lowest tethering caps of any unlimited option in my spreadsheet.
Note: All eSIMs are 30 days unless specified otherwise.
Holafly’s best Italy eSIMs (📶5G):
- Unlimited: 7 days for €22.50 (€3.21/day), 15 days for €41.50 (€2.77/day), 30 days for €59.90 (€2/day)
💰 Save 5% on Holafly eSIMs with promocode FINDINGALEXX
Saily
Saily’s higher prices come with some built-in security benefits that no one else offers, like an ad blocker and a virtual location feature, but I don’t think those are worth an extra €10 for a 10GB plan or €20 more for a month of unlimited data.
Note: All eSIMs are 30 days unless specified otherwise.
Saily’s best Italy eSIMs (📶5G):
- 3GB for €7.99 (€2.66/GB)
- 10GB for €18.49 (€1.85/GB)
- 20GB for €25.99 (€1.30/GB)
- Unlimited 5GB/day: 7 days for €20.49 (€2.93/day), 15 days for €38.99 (€2.60/day), 30 days for €56.99 (€1.90/day)

Orange
This French telco has the highest-fixed-data Italy eSIM options I could find, but they’re 4G-only which could be a dealbreaker for the kinds of travellers who need 200-500GB in a month anyway.
Their unlimited 100GB/day ones also look impressive at first glance, but unless you’re streaming non-stop all day you’ll be paying for a daily allowance you’ll probably never even make a dent in.
Note: All eSIMs are 30 days unless specified otherwise.
Orange’s best Italy eSIMs (📶4G):
- 3GB for €6.99 (7 days, €2.33/GB)
- 10GB for €12.99 (7 days, €1.30/GB)
- 20GB for €18.99 (€0.95/GB)
- 50GB for €29.99 (€0.60/GB)
- 100GB for €49.99 (€0.50/GB)
- 100GB for €50.99 (45 days, €0.51/GB)
- 200GB for €74.99 (45 days, €0.37/GB)
- 500GB for €154.99 (90 days, €0.31/GB)
- Unlimited 100GB/day: 5 days for €23.99 (€4.80/day), 15 days for €54.99 (€3.67/day), 25 days for €74.99 (€3/day)
Jetpac
Jetpac’s unlimited Italy eSIMs cost about double the daily rate of my unlimited picks for less data each day (3GB vs 5GB), and their fixed data options are nothing special except for their 2GB for €2 single-day option if you just need to bridge a gap.
Note: All eSIMs are 30 days unless specified otherwise.
Jetpac’s best Italy eSIMs (📶5G):
- 2GB for €2 (1 day, €1/GB)
- 10GB for €9.50 (7 days, €0.95/GB)
- 20GB for €23 (14 days, €1.15/GB)
- 50GB for €43.50 (€0.87/GB)
- Unlimited 3GB/day: 7 days for €25 (€3.57/day), 14 days for €47.50 (€3.39/day), 30 days for €79 (€2.63/day)

Maya
Maya is an established eSIM provider but they’re going through a major rebrand and it’s messy!
Their “legacy” plans for Italy are still available at legacy.maya.net/esim/italy, their support team told me they’ll keep working but I’d be a bit hesitant to spend any money there in case the site gets shut down or issues pop up during their switchover (and their prices aren’t anything to write home about anyway).
Maya’s new product is weirdly generic, a global eSIM that covers 151 countries and has options for 3, 7, 14 and 30 days from €1.42/day to €2.83/day, there’s no Italy-specific option and that price is too much for a single-country eSIM here.
Unfortunately they’ve also joined the dark side of shady fair use policies 🕵🏼♀️ While their legacy plans have a clear 3GB/day high-speed limit before a generous throttled speed of 10 Mbps (then 1 Mbps if you keep going), their new global plan has this all over the website:

And they really double down in the FAQs:

However their Trustpilot reviews show some customers who have clearly had their speeds slowed down, and when I asked their customer service outright they confirmed while their plans “do not have a fixed daily data cap”, they “reserve the right to manage network resources accordingly” if someone uses more than 5GB per day, sooo yes they do have throttling.

Note: All eSIMs are 30 days unless specified otherwise.
Maya’s best Italy eSIMs:
- Global (📶5G):
- Unlimited (5GB/day according to customer service): 3 days for €8.49 (€2.83/day), 7 days for €16.99 (€2.43/day), 14 days for €23.79 (€1.70/day), 30 days for €42.49 (€1.42/day)
- Legacy (📶5G):
- 1GB for €4.99 (5 days, €4.99/GB)
- 10GB for €16.99 (€1.70/GB)
- 20GB for €25.99 (€1.30/GB)
- 50GB for €40.99 (€0.82/GB)
- Unlimited 3GB/day: 5 days for €15.99 (€3.20/day), 10 days for €20.99 (€2.10/day), 30 days for €40.99 (€1.37/day)
GigSky
Best known as the cruise ship eSIM specialists, GigSky’s regular Italy plans mostly sit at the pricier end of the spectrum, apart from the 50GB 180-day one which offers a decent per GB rate for a full six months of coverage if you don’t need much data over that period.
Their site contradicts itself on auto-renewal though (the FAQ says every plan renews but the unlimited page says they don’t), so after you purchase anything just double check your account page to see if there’s anywhere you can cancel the subscription.
Note: All eSIMs are 30 days unless specified otherwise.
GigSky’s best Italy eSIMs (📶5G):
- 3GB for €5.99 (15 days, €2/GB)
- 10GB for €15.49 (€1.55/GB)
- 20GB for €20.49 (90 days, €1.02/GB)
- 50GB for €28.99 (180 days, €0.58/GB)
- Unlimited 3.5GB/day: 7 days for €23.99 (€3.43/day), 15 days for €43.99 (€2.93/day), 30 days for €63.99 (€2.13/day)
GlobalYO
GlobalYO’s 100GB eSIM lasts a full 60 days and comes out at only €0.45/GB if you don’t mind being limited to 4G speeds, but the rest of their Italy plans are pretty run-of-the-mill.
Note: All eSIMs are 30 days unless specified otherwise.
GlobalYO’s best Italy eSIMs (📶4G):
- 3GB for €7.12 (15 days, €2.37/GB)
- 10GB for €12 (€1.20/GB)
- 20GB for €19 (€0.95/GB)
- 50GB for €30 (45 days, €0.60/GB)
- 100GB for €45 (60 days, €0.45/GB)
- Unlimited (2GB/day): 7 days for €16 (€2.29/day), 15 days for €26 (€1.73/day), 30 days for €38 (€1.27/day)
Voye
Voye’s three-network eSIMs give you a good shot at staying online all around the country, but their Italy plans sit in the middle of the pack on price.
Note: All eSIMs are 30 days unless specified otherwise.
Voye’s best Italy eSIMs (📶5G):
- 6GB for €8 (7 days, €1.33/GB)
- 10GB for €11 (15 days, €1.10/GB)
- 15GB for €14 (€0.93/GB)
- 25GB for €23 (€0.92/GB)

aloSIM
aloSIM is an almost-clone of Saily in Italy, with the same month-long plans priced between 1c and 51c higher but without the online security features.
To put their prices in perspective, their €19 10GB plan is 139% more expensive than SIMOVO’s €7.95 for an identical allowance.
Note: All eSIMs are 30 days unless specified otherwise.
aloSIM’s best Italy eSIMs (📶5G):
- 3GB for €4 (1 day, €1.33/GB)
- 10GB for €19 (€1.90/GB)
- 20GB for €26 (€1.30/GB)
- 50GB for €46 (€0.92/GB)

SimCorner
SimCorner’s fixed data plans are cheaper than Saily’s, which isn’t saying much, and their unlimited plans don’t fare any better.
Note: All eSIMs are 30 days unless specified otherwise.
SimCorner’s best Italy eSIMs (📶5G):
- 3GB for €6.95 (€2.32/GB)
- 10GB for €13.95 (€1.40/GB)
- 20GB for €23.95 (€1.20/GB)
- 50GB for €31.95 (45 days, €0.64/GB)
- Unlimited 3GB/day: 8 days for €20.95 (€2.62/day), 16 days for €43.95 (€2.75/day), 30 days for €61.95 (€2.06/day)

voilà
I hadn’t heard of voilà until researching for this Italy eSIM guide (they didn’t even show up for my Europe one), they look legit-ish but the thing that’s stopping me from recommending them confidently is that their website says “500,000+ travelers already trust us” yet their Trustpilot has less than 200 reviews.
That’s not to say they’re dodgy, they’re a French company so they might have stronger trust signals on review sites I’m not aware of, but I’ll test them out on my upcoming Italy trip to determine whether I can vouch for them or not.
Note: All eSIMs are 30 days unless specified otherwise.
voilà’s best Italy eSIMs (📶5G):
- 3GB for €2.80 (15 days, €0.93/GB)
- 10GB for €7.90 (€0.79/GB)
- 20GB for €15.10 (€0.76/GB)
- 50GB for €31.40 (€0.63/GB)
esim.net
If I was colour-blind then esim.net would’ve taken the top spot for a couple of categories in terms of best value, but the red flags are far too bright for me to look past.
When I was researching my Europe guide I came across some inconsistencies in their plans, their customer service never got back to me to clear them up, and their social media pages have comments from creators about unpaid invoices so I do think their prices are almost certainly too good to be true (but they’re another one on my test list).
Note: All eSIMs are 30 days unless specified otherwise.

Firsty
Firsty lets you pause your plan on days you don’t need data (like a lazy day by the pool on hotel WiFi) so you never waste a day you’ve paid for, but that doesn’t make up for their unlimited plans costing almost double Superalink’s for the same 5GB a day (€69 vs €36.96 for 30 days) or fixed plans that also cost about twice as much as some others.
Note: All eSIMs are 30 days unless specified otherwise.
Firsty’s best Italy eSIMs (📶5G):
- 3GB for €7.50 (€2.50/GB)
- 10GB for €17 (€1.70/GB)
- 20GB for €26.40 (€1.32/GB)
- 50GB for €49 (€0.98/GB)
- Unlimited 5GB/day: 7 days for €22.40 (€3.20/day), 15 days for €45 (€3/day), 30 days for €69 (€2.30/day)
Instabridge
Instabridge’s low-data eSIMs are good value options if you only need a little data for a stopover or a few days, I haven’t vetted their Italy plans yet though and I’d personally stick with Nomad’s free 1GB trial or MobiMatter’s 2GB option.
Note: All eSIMs are 30 days unless specified otherwise.
Instabridge’s best Italy eSIMs (📶5G):
- 1GB for €1.78 (7 days, €1.78/GB)
- 3GB for €4.01 (15 days, €1.34/GB)
- 10GB for €11 (€1.10/GB)
- 20GB for €14 (7 days, €0.70/GB)
SimOptions
SimOptions has some decent options for short trips (like 5GB for a week for €4.90) but their sales tactics maaajorly put me off, they have “discounted” prices below a struck-through retail price which look like you’re getting a great deal, but after checking their Europe and UK plans multiple times over the past year I’m fairly confident it’s just a permanent fake sale.
This also makes it impossible to compare them properly!
Note: All eSIMs are 30 days unless specified otherwise.
SimOptions’s best Italy eSIMs (📶5G):
- 3GB for €3.50 (3 days, €1.17/GB)
- 5GB for €4.90 (7 days, €0.98/GB)
- 10GB for €7.90 (7 days, €0.79/GB)
- 20GB for €14.90 (15 days, €0.74/GB)
- 50GB for €36.50 (€0.73/GB)
- 100GB for €71.90 (180 days, €0.72/GB)
Simify
Simify’s 180-day plan for €248.95 makes the biggest dent in your travel budget of any plan that came up in my research, and for that price you get a murky fair use policy (no stated daily cap but their help centre says their unlimited eSIMs may slow to around 3Mbps after around 1 to 1.5GB a day). No thank you!
Note: All eSIMs are 30 days unless specified otherwise.
Simify’s best Italy eSIMs (📶5G):
- Unlimited (unclear daily cap): 7 days for €23.95 (€3.42/day), 15 days for €47.95 (€3.20/day), 30 days for €71.95 (€2.40/day), 180 days for €248.95 (€1.38/day)
WorldSIM
WorldSIM’s €0.55/GB rate for their 20GB eSIM is another would-be category winner that’s held in limbo because of some serious alarm bells, including a website that doesn’t look like it’s been updated in a decade and a bunch of AI-slop articles on Medium claiming to be “real reviews” but clearly are not.
Note: All eSIMs are 30 days unless specified otherwise.
WorldSIM’s best Italy eSIMs (📶5G):
- 3GB for €3.13 (€1.04/GB)
- 10GB for €8.44 (€0.84/GB)
- 20GB for €10.95 (€0.55/GB)
- Unlimited 3GB/day: 7 days for €8.77 (€1.25/day), 15 days for €17.66 (€1.18/day), 30 days for €23.05 (€0.77/day)
Roamic
Roamic’s 10GB (€5.99) and 50GB (€18.99) have the lowest per-GB rate of those data amounts, but (you knew that was coming!) between their unlimited plans hiding a 3GB daily cap in a closed FAQ toggle and their customer service giving me wrong information about their wider Europe coverage, they’re not eligible for a top spot until I’ve tested one myself.
Note: All eSIMs are 30 days unless specified otherwise.
Roamic’s best Italy eSIMs (📶5G):
- 1GB for €0.99 (7 days, €0.99/GB)

- 20GB for €10.99 (€0.55/GB)
- 50GB for €18.99 (€0.38/GB)
- Unlimited 3GB/day: 7 days for €12.99 (€1.86/day), 14 days for €19.99 (€1.43/day), 30 days for €30.99 (€1.03/day)

This one is a hard pass from me for any destination after I discovered that their “genuine unlimited without speed throttling” Europe eSIMs not only weren’t throttle-free, they actually had a 1GB high-speed data limit for the entire validity period (and you could buy eSIMs up to 90 days) ☠️
Their unlimited Italy eSIM at least admits that speed drops to 5 Mbps after you hit the daily cap, which would be helpful… if they told you the daily cap.
Note: All eSIMs are 30 days unless specified otherwise.
iRoamly’s best Italy eSIMs (📶5G):
- 1GB for €1.34 (3 days, €1.34/GB)
- 10GB for €6.24 (7 days, €0.62/GB)
- 20GB for €19 (€0.95/GB) 📞
- 50GB for €27 (€0.54/GB)
- Daily 0.5GB: 1 day for €0.53 (€0.53/day), 30 days for €14 (€0.47/day)
- Daily 1GB: 7 days for €4.45 (€0.64/day)
- Daily 3GB: 7 days for €11 (€1.57/day), 30 days for €46 (€1.53/day)
- Unlimited (unclear daily cap): 7 days for €19 (€2.71/day), 30 days for €79 (€2.63/day)
ETravelSim
Last but certainly not least-dodgy, ETravelSim is another brand I’d steer well clear of from my regional Europe findings. I found a discrepancy between their “no caps, no throttling” claims for one of their plans which in reality had a daily cap resulting in slowed speeds, aaaand let’s just say their customer service didn’t see the issue with that.
Note: All eSIMs are 30 days unless specified otherwise.
ETravelSim’s best Italy eSIMs (📶5G):
- 3GB for €6.95 (€2.32/GB)
- 10GB for €14.95 (€1.49/GB)
- 20GB for €22.95 (€1.15/GB)
- 50GB for €30.95 (€0.62/GB)
- Unlimited: 7 days for €15.95 (€2.28/day), 15 days for €29.95 (€2/day), 30 days for €35.95 (€1.20/day)
- Unlimited: 7 days for €19.95 (€2.85/day), 15 days for €37.95 (€2.53/day), 30 days for €60.95 (€2.03/day) 📞
Best Italy eSIMs by data usage
If you opted to scroll past the 8000 word breakdown of plans and providers (honestly I wish I could’ve done that too 🫠) to get to an easily-digestible comparison, these are my top picks and the ones to avoid for each type of traveller.
Typical travellers (10 to 50GB a month)
Top picks:
- MobiMatter’s NextLink 25GB for €17 (€0.68/GB) is the best value mid-size plan from a trusted brand, and their 12GB for €9.50 (€0.79/GB) is a good fit if you don’t need as much data.
- SIMOVO’s 20GB for €13.95 (€0.70/GB) and 10GB for €7.95 (€0.80/GB) are the cheapest options if you’d rather spend less upfront.
- MobiMatter’s NextLink 50GB for €28 gives you 60 days instead of 30 (€0.56/GB) if you’re staying longer than a month.
Avoid:
Light data users (under 10GB a month)
Top picks:
- Ubigi’s 3GB for €5 (€1.67/GB) is the cheapest month-long 3GB plan from a reputable brand.
- SIMOVO’s 5GB for €6.95 (€1.39/GB) allows a bit more breathing room, but you can go up to their 10GB for just €1 more.
- MobiMatter’s NextLink 2GB for €3.50 lasts 15 days, ideal for a stopover, a port day on a cruise or a weekend trip.
Avoid:
- Small plans from Airalo, Saily, aloSIM and Roamless, where most 3GB and 5GB plans cost €1.90 to €2.83 per GB.
Heavy data users (50GB+ a month)
Top picks:
- SIMOVO’s 50GB for €25.95 (€0.52/GB) is the best value high-data plan from any green-flagged provider for under €45 without Italian bureaucracy.
- GlobalYO’s 100GB for €45 (€0.45/GB) lasts 60 days but only offers 4G speeds.
- WindTre’s 200GB Tourist Pass for €25 (€0.13/GB) is the cheapest by miles if you don’t mind the drama of passport registration and potentially waiting a bit for plan activation.
- Superalink’s unlimited plan for €36.96 gives you 5GB of full-speed data a day for 30 days (€1.23/day), though hotspotting is capped at 2GB a day.
Avoid:
- Unlimited plans that don’t tell you the daily cap (like Holafly, Simify and iRoamly) or charge a premium for less daily data (Jetpac’s 3GB/day is €79 for 30 days, ouch).
Italy eSIM FAQs
What is the best eSIM for Italy?
For most travellers, the best eSIM for Italy is MobiMatter’s NextLink 25GB for €17 (€0.68/GB), which is enough for typical maps, messaging and browsing over a month. Heavy data users get more for their money with SIMOVO’s 50GB for €25.95 (€0.52/GB), or if you’re on a tight budget, go for SIMOVO’s 10GB for €7.95.
What is the best unlimited eSIM for Italy?
For a month in Italy, the best unlimited eSIM is Superalink’s 30-day plan for €36.96 (€1.23/day), with 5GB of full-speed data a day (then unlimited at 1Mbps). For two weeks, Ubigi’s 15-day plan for €25 (€1.67/day) has the same 5GB daily allowance, and you can use all of it for hotspotting.
Are Airalo, Holafly, Saily and Orange good for Italy?
They’re all legitimate eSIM providers, but none of them offer the best deal. Airalo and Saily charge €17.50 and €18.49 for 10GB (more than double SIMOVO’s €7.95) Holafly’s month of unlimited data costs €59.90 and they don’t say how much of it is full speed, Orange’s plans are 4G-only and their 100GB-a-day unlimited ones are way more than most people need.
Do Italy eSIMs work in San Marino and Vatican City?
Yes, both! Vatican City doesn’t have its own mobile network, so you’ll be on the same Italian networks as the rest of Rome. San Marino is covered by Italian networks too, so your Italy eSIM should work there without needing any extra coverage.
How much data do I need in Italy?
If you mainly use maps, messaging and quick searches, 10GB a month is usually enough data for Italy. Add social media scrolling and the odd video call and 20-25GB should see you through. Streamers, video uploaders and anyone hotspotting a laptop can go past 50GB a month, so SIMOVO’s 50GB for €25.95 or an unlimited plan is a better fit (just check any daily cap or tethering limit).
Final thoughts on the best eSIMs for Italy
If you actually made it through to the end of this post then let me lovingly tell you that you need to get a life 😂 but also I hope you’ve found the best Italy eSIM to suit your travel needs!
Whatever one you choose, don’t pay more than:
- €0.80 per GB for a fixed data plan with 10GB or more
- €1.30 a day for a month of unlimited data, €1.70 a day for two weeks or €2.40 a day for one week (and they’re only really worth it if you’ll use 2-5GB per day on average, otherwise high-data fixed plans are better)
For the providers that seem too good to be true, I’ll be testing them out on my next Italy trip and will come back here to share my experiences, and we’ll see if any of them can knock the current winners off their podiums.
