Where is Hokitika Fire Station Boutique Apartments?
Right in the middle of Hokitika, just a short walk from shops, eateries, the National Kiwi Centre and the beach.
About Hokitika Fire Station
I’m a sucker for any accommodation with a story behind it, and Hokitika Fire Station Boutique Apartment pays homage to its history in so many ways.
Each of the five apartments is named after one of the chiefs who have led the Hokitika Fire Brigade since its inception in 1865. There are trinkets and details dotted around each apartment as tributes to the building’s rich heritage, like old firemen hats, brigade photos, books and more.
In my apartment I particularly loved the gap in the wall for the firemens’ pole, and the little fire-truck decals along the windows.
There are two ground floor apartments, one is a fully self-catering three bedroom and one is an accessible studio apartment with a kitchenette. Upstairs there are three studio apartments with kitchenettes. All studios can sleep two in the bed and a further two guests on the sofa bed.
Hokitika Fire Station Boutique Apartments have also received the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award for 2021, a huge accolade in the accommodation business, as well as being rated five stars by New Zealand’s tourism assurance organisation Qualmark.
My apartment
I stayed in the Chief Henshaw apartment, named after the Hokitika Fire Brigade Chief of 1866-1867, Captain William Henshaw.
This apartment is HUGE, boasting three bedrooms, a bathroom and a massive open-plan kitchen/dining/lounge area, all decked out with stylish décor and comfortable furniture.
The kitchen is well-equipped with a stovetop, oven, microwave and tea/coffee making facilities, the living area gets loads of natural light from the floor-to-ceiling windows, and there’s a sun-soaked front deck for outdoor living too.
The bedrooms are quite basic but really comfortable, and the bathroom comes with lovely toiletries made right here on the West Coast.
With heating/air-con, speedy WiFi and a big TV, this is perfect for a few couples or a family looking for the best place to stay in Hokitika.
The facilities
The apartments have a few handy facilities to take your trip to the next level.
There are laundry facilities for guest use, a secure storage area, a shared outdoor patio and a Tesla charging station, as well as off street parking out the back.
The area
I absolutely adore Hokitika, it’s super chill with some quirky eateries, unique things to do and easy access to a bunch of tourist hot spots as well as hidden gems.
Here are some of the best things to do in Hokitika:
- Watch sunset from the Sunset Point, just a few minutes from the apartment
- Take a photo with the Hokitika sign, made from driftwood. Just don’t touch the top of the ‘T’, I accidentally did and it fell off!
- Spot a kiwi at the National Kiwi Centre
- Carve your own pounamu (greenstone) at Bonz’n’Stonz
- Try out the new West Coast Treetop Walk
- See the glow worms at the Glow Worm Dell
- Do the Hokitika Gorge Walk
- Go for a wander at Lake Mahinapua or Lake Kaniere
- Bike (or e-bike) along the West Coast Wilderness Trail
- Visit my favourite restaurant in town, Gatherer
The verdict on Hokitika Fire Station Boutique Apartments
