Car-free travel itineraries

Want to explore the world without the stress of driving on unfamiliar roads, language barriers with road signs or the added costs of parking, petrol and toll roads? I feel ya!

I hardly ever rent a car while I’m travelling solo, only if the place really requires your own four wheels. Car hire ain’t cheap when you’ve got no one to split the cost with, I’d rather soak up the scenery than focus on the road, and navigating narrow streets in Italy or the wild west highways in Albania sounds wayyyy more stressful without an emotional support person in the passenger seat.

These itineraries are completely car-free, built around trains, buses, ferries and other public transport, with all routes tested in real life (by me!), and plenty of mistakes made (also by me) so you can learn what *not* to. Perfect if you’re solo, sticking to a budget, or just don’t fancy arguing with your partner about whether that sign means no parking. Spoiler alert: It does, and now you have a €50 fine 😭

Car-free Europe itineraries

Travelling through Europe without a car is a lot easier than you might think. The continent’s train network is extensive, buses cover where trains can’t go and ferries connect Mediterranean ports with day ferries and some overnighters.

My car-free itineraries below will show you exactly how to plan your route using public transport without losing your mind.

And if you know you’ll be sticking to trains for most of your trip, I’ve got loads of detailed train reviews, travel pass comparisons and rail-specific tips on my train travel hub.
