If you’re looking for self-contained Martinborough accommodation, local company Go To Martinborough have got you covered. Here’s my review of their gorgeous two bedroom villa, the Orange Door.
A couple of months ago I had a quick Martinborough getaway with my mum, mainly as a food, wine and shopping stop and to break up the trip from Hawke’s Bay to Wellington.
We spent two nights in the town and we booked our accommodation through the team at Go To Martinborough, a locally-owned and operated holiday home rental who have more than 20 villas, cottages and apartments available for travellers to book.
The homes are all hand-picked by the team to ensure they meet high standards in terms of comfort, quality and facilities, and there are options from studio apartments to historic cottages to large villas that can house groups as big as 16.
If you’re looking for Martinborough accommodation for a romantic weekend, a girl’s trip or a group getaway, Go To Martinborough is sure to have something to suit.
Read on for my full Orange Door review to see why I loved it so much, and why you should consider it for your upcoming Martinborough trip.
A review of the Orange Door
The Orange Door is a newly-renovated two bedroom villa with loads of living space, set amongst an olive grove with minimal light or sound pollution.
The two bedrooms are spacious, one with an en suite, both with big windows and heaters to keep warm in winter. The beds were super comfortable and decked out with luxurious linen, one is a queen and one is two twins made up as a queen unless requested otherwise. The couch also folds out to a sofa bed and can sleep a further two people, so you can fit six in total.
The living area is huge and open plan, with the lounge opening up onto a sun-soaked patio for outdoor living. The dining table is massive, there’s a fire for the colder months and the kitchen is decked out with all the mod cons you’d need plus a huge island/breakfast bar for food prep or sitting down with a glass of wine and a platter.
But my absolute favourite thing about the Orange Door is the bathroom! There’s nothing better than a bath with a view, and this one really takes the cake.
The huge free-standing tub sits right in front of doors that open onto the patio and look out into the olive groves, with sun streaming in most of the day and bird song to entertain you as you soak the day away. The dream!

Things to do in Martinborough
- Visit the wineries, obviously! My favourite is Poppies, they’re a small boutique winery serving up the most delicious platters.
- Many of the wineries in Martinborough are easily accessible by walking or cycling, so you could do a self-guided wander or rent a bike from Martinborough Wine Merchants
- If you want to learn from locals while exploring the wineries, check out Martinborough Wine Walks, who offer both private and group guided walks around the best vineyards in town
- Head over to Greytown (15 min drive) for some of the best clothing and homewares shopping in the country. Mango Interiors is a personal favourite, I was looking for a unique graduation gift for my brother at the time and this place had a bunch of things to choose from!
- Or pop over to Featherstone (15 min drive) for a visit to one of their seven bookstores, they have the highest number of bookstores per capita in New Zealand! While you’re there don’t miss C’est Cheese, a brilliant cheesery with local and imported goodies.
- Head down to Cape Palliser, the southernmost point of the North Island, home to a famous lighthouse and the country’s largest fur seal colony
- Stop off at the Putangirua Pinnacles on the way back for landscapes that look like they’re straight out of Lord of the Rings
Where is the Orange Door?
The Orange Door is a two minute drive or ten minute walk from Martinborough’s main square.
The final verdict
We loved our short but sweet stay at the Orange Door, it was the perfect spot for a relaxing visit to Martinborough.
I’d definitely go back again if I head down for a winery trip or a girl’s weekend, and I’d love to visit in summer next time and really make the most of the sunny patio.
