Awatuna Sunset Lodge, a smoke and vape-free, luxury adult-only retreat is the perfect place to relax and be nurtured. Perfectly situated to see the sights of the West Coast, we recommend at least a 2-night stay. The property has uninterrupted views of the Tasman Sea where you can watch the sunset. Separated by Waimea Creek, you can explore the beach and experience the raw West Coast scenery at its finest! Awatuna Sunset Lodge is more than just a bed, it's a culinary and adventurous experience. One night is not enough, and you will see from our reviews most people who stayed one night recommend at least a 2-night stay. Check-in is 3 pm -6 pm and check-out is 10.30 am. The property is on 1 hectare of land where you can take a stroll through to see our fruit and vegetable gardens and meet our hens who provide us with eggs for our guests. Breakfast is included with both a continental and cooked English Breakfast. Espresso coffee is made to order with breakfast or tea is also served. Elizabeth has been making great coffee and food for 43 years growing up in the well-renowned award-family business Bar Coluzzi in Sydney. She even made Selwyn do a Barista Course. Please note there are no cooking facilities but the kitchenette can be used after breakfast service to make sandwiches etc for your day out exploring or heading to your next destination. We have a full dinner menu from homegrown and homemade food and use the finest ingredients which Elizabeth cooks fresh from scratch and cater to most dietary requirements. A true culinary experience! Meals need to be ordered by 10 a.m. the day before arrival. Last-minute options are available. Both our King Tasman and Waimea King rooms have uninterrupted sea views. Although our Triple Tui room is roadside, noise is dampened by double-glazed windows, and the room and ensuite are furnished to the same standard as our sea view rooms. Tui has easy access to our sea view guest lounge and dining and outdoor seaside deck.
We would like to introduce ourselves, Selwyn and Elizabeth. We have been in the accommodation industry for over 10 years. Selwyn, a mechanic by trade, and Elizabeth, a registered nurse who has owned and operated Cafes for over 20 years, we pride ourselves on providing exceptional customer service. We purchased the property in November 2019 which was purpose-built as a B&B and set about renovating and painting the rooms and guest common areas and purchasing new, comfy beds. We like to share our local and New Zealand knowledge with tourists as we have extensively traveled throughout the country from Cape Reinga to Stewart Island. We love entertaining and getting to meet our guests at happy hour every night. Make sure you arrive by 6 p.m. to join us for a complimentary drink and canapes. An extensive menu is offered for dinner every night. Elizabeth makes and bakes all the food. With her Italian and Greek background, you will find pasta and pizza and traditional Greek meals on offer and freshly handmade. Using only fresh ingredients, dinner is popular with guests. Orders by 10 a.m. the day prior to arrival. Some meals are available at late notice.
At the beach behind the property is a blue penguin breeding zone (June -January). The adult pairs commence coming onto Awatuna Neach in April to prepare their nests. You can also find pounamu (jade, greenstone) along the shoreline. Try surf-casting; the area has snapper and elephant fish and other great-eating fish to be caught. You can see seals and their babies on the beach in spring. Whitebait and gold can be found in Waimea Creek, right on our doorstep. Try our whitebait fritters (seasonal) that we've caught in the creek with Elizabeth's freshly made soft white bread and our free-range eggs. The newest attraction to the area is the West Coast Wilderness Trail. This 3-4 days bike ride traverses amazing scenery and lakes of the West Coast from Greymouth to Ross. Hokitika is renowned for its Pounamu (Greenstone) with many shops in its beautiful town centre. IanzArt has interesting pieces made out of cooper and other materials and Ian is always happy to share stories and his art with visitors. The glass-blowing shop also is worth a visit with lovely pieces to purchase as a souvenir of your stay. The Tree Top walk is a must-do when visiting the West Coast. We have many natural sights you can explore including Hokitika Gorge Lake Mahinapua, Lake Kaniere as well as numerous walks and tramps. Other places of interest include the Kiwi Centre, a number of museums, and the Regent Theatre there is plenty to experience in all weather.
