I’m obsessed with finding out people’s current obsessions. Instead of asking someone what they’re interested in or what they enjoy, you’re asking them what’s on their mind when they wake up and when they go to sleep – it’s a proper look into the food, places, people and ideas that are epic enough to consume their thoughts. I’m interested in travel but I’m obsessed with cherry blossom season in Japan, I enjoy food but I’m obsessed with Zizzi’s Mushroom Brindisi. You get the picture.
Here’s a list of the top five things that are trending in my brain this month.
BUY: Moment lenses
My buddy Jack and I were stoked to partner with Moment iPhone lenses for our recent Iceland trip, creating photo and video content for their social channels. These lenses are an absolute gamechanger for anyone who’s serious about iPhone photography.
Grab a case for your iPhone, Google Pixel or Samsung Galaxy (opt for the normal case or a battery version for extra juice), then choose your lens of choice. My number one pick is the Moment Wide, which lets you capture 2x more picture than your usual camera — perfect for travel photography, landscapes, interiors or group photos. Top quality images, easy to clip on and off and I assure you you’ll never go back to normal phone cameras again. They’re $99.99 USD and they ship all around the world (plus get 10% off if you use my affiliate link here!). Probably the best thing under $100 I’ve ever purchased.
All the above photos were shot on my Moment Wide Lens.
FOLLOW: Emma Gonzalez
This. Girl. Is. Amazing. More intelligent, well-spoken and socially aware than the US President (not that that’s too hard…), Emma Gonzalez is only 18 years old and is already making a name for herself across the entire world for her dedication to the March For Our Lives gun control campaign. She took on the NRA spokesperson Dana Loesch on live TV, helped organise one of the largest political marches in history, and is owning Twitter with 1.5 million followers and hundreds of clap-backs to adults who think they can beat a teenager at social media. This issue has gone on for too long, but it seems like Emma and her fellow MSD students are finally gaining traction in the case to reform gun laws. You go girl.
LISTEN: Gary Vaynerchuk’s PodSessions
If you don’t know who Gary Vee is, do yourself a favour and watch this. Businessman, speaker, social media genius, five-time New York Times bestseller and genuinely awesome dude, he’s a must-read/-watch/-listen for anyone interested in content marketing, workplace culture and getting shit done. You can follow him on basically any and all social mediums, but my favourite piece of content he puts out is his PodSessions podcast (you can watch one here or find them on your podcast app).
PodSessions is a roundtable discussion between Gary and three or four guests from totally different backgrounds and industries – he’s had music producers, marathon runners, Instagram influencers, comedians, business owners and more on the show. They talk about everything from popular culture and technology trends to their childhood memories and current obsessions (hence this question). It’s something special to be able to listen to legends deep dive into topics and bounce ideas off one another with their own points of view, collaboration at its finest!
TRAVEL: U by Uniworld
In terms of travel styles I’m pretty open – I’ve done bus tours, small group tours, solo travel, family trips, romantic getaways (ew) and island hopping – but U by Uniworld’s European river cruises are ridiculously high on my wanderlist this year. A hybrid of Contiki’s 18-35 tours and Uniworld’s river cruises which generally target the older generation, U by Uniworld will take you down the Seine, the Rhine or the Danube on a classy AF boutique boat complete with a spa, rooftop deck and an onboard cocktail bar. There are some sweet inclusions (city tours, pub crawls, castle visits and the like) as well as optional extras for you to build your own dream itinerary.
I love that these trips tick off lesser-known cities and towns off the tour bus trail – the Danube Flow goes from Regensburg to Budapest via Straubing, Passau, Linz, Melk, Wachau Valley, Durnstein, Vienna and Bratislava. I’m seriously looking for a travel buddy or two to share a room with me on this one, so if anyone is actually interested please get in touch!
Hi, I’m Alexx and I’m a dumpling-aholic. The longest-standing obsession out of this list, my addiction to this ancient Chinese delicacy recently culminated in a Hong Kong stopover. You think I’m kidding, but I literally chose Hong Kong over San Francisco, Singapore and Los Angeles so I could eat dumplings for every meal. Oh, and the pork and black truffle xiao long bao a.k.a. soupy dumplings from Din Tai Fung made the entire trip worth it.
My top picks in Auckland are Dumpling Box or Blue Breeze Inn, and for London I suggest Jen Cafe or Dumpling Heart. Edit: While researching dumplings for this paragraph I came across a blog called Dumpling Hunter and I’m now rethinking my entire career plan.
So there you have it, a sneak peek into my bank statement/search history/bedtime listening routine. I’d love to know what you’re currently obsessed with, tell me in the comments below!
